Thanksgiving Meditation, 2016

Happy Thanksgiving Outdoor Yoga community! 

I know I speak on behalf of all students and teachers when I say our gratitude for you and this community is massive. By adventuring around the city to show up for your practice, to create new experiences, to do your best in sharing your love and light with all of us, even on the tough days, even on the awesome days, and all those in between.. you create this magic that is our community.
Thank you for being you. And thank you for making life in San Francisco so much sweeter. 

We hope to see you at the end of this weekend, for a sunny Sunday practice at sunset on the most beautiful beach in the world! Celebrate the end of a special weekend in yoga community. 

A few of you had asked that we share the Gratitude Meditation and Prayer from our Gratitude Fundraiser Class on 11/13. Here it is for you. This is our collective gratitude prayer woven in with a traditional loving kindness meditation from the Buddhist tradition.


Gratitude Meditation + Prayer

Sit up nice and tall wherever you are. Stacking all of your vertebrate perfectly one over the other.

If you don’t sit in this position often feel free to find a wall space to lean against, or a buddy to go back to back with.



We congratulate you for taking this time to be in the spirit of gratitude and community tonight.

Allow yourself to settle here, to notice your body, notice your breath.

Checking the ego and judgement at the door. It's part of the human condition :)

And choosing to remember our oneness. With all the people around you here tonight. And all people everywhere. 

With a kind breath, inviting ourselves here into the present moment.


After each person shares a piece of the meditation, we’ll repeat this phrase from the traditional buddhist loving kindness practice:

May I be happy, may I be healthy, may I be peaceful, may I live with ease.


Grateful for this opportunity to notice what is going right.

Trusting that what we focus on expands.

Knowing that our primitive minds are wired to notice what’s going wrong, to survive and protect.

And so skillfully, with compassion, choosing to focus on what’s going right.

With each breath this evening, an invitation to refocus on all the blessings around us.

Breathe in gratitude and feel it expand in the body.

Exhale out the rest.


May I be happy, may I be healthy, may I be peaceful, may I live with ease.


Grateful to this opportunity to have gratitude for ourselves.

For all you do.

For showing up.

We each manage an unbelievable amount of life, everyday.

For all of your intention, everything you do day to day to make this world a better place.

Acknowledging that we are doing the best we can to bring kindness, love, patience into our lives and to others.

And quick to forgive ourselves for the moments of judgement, fear, anger.

Forgiveness is such an important part of our gratitude practice.


Breathe in forgiveness.

Exhale judgement.


May I be happy, may I be healthy, may I be peaceful, may I live with ease.


Gratitude for all of our emotions.

Imaging a recent instance of sadness, hurt, or frustration

Call up that feeling. Hold it in your heart space. See it. Acknowledge it.

Grateful for all the feelings that remind us we are human, that we are connected.

We are grateful for this practice that illuminates the darker moments and helps us to remember the light that lives within.

Grateful for all emotions and our practice that holds space for us to feel beautifully human.


May I be happy, may I be healthy, may I be peaceful, may I live with ease.


Grateful for this community here tonight, for everyone who couldn’t be here but who we miss, and for our yoga community everywhere.

For all the teachers that have come before us.

Acknowledging all practitioners, everywhere in the world.

For everyone who steps on their mat, everyday, with this same prayer, this intention for this practice to benefit all beings everywhere.

Inhaling with grateful for our global yoga community.

Calling to mind all yoga practitioners in the world, and especially the ones you know, and even the ones you don’t.

Gratitude for our all those who show up.


For all of our yoga community:

May you be happy, may you be healthy, may you be peaceful, may you live with ease.


Grateful for all people everywhere, who work to make this world a better place.

Our service members, heart-centered politicians of whom there are many!, our activists, environmentalists, artist and all people everywhere who consciously show up in this world to bring light to others. 
Gratitude for all those living in service of others.

For all people everywhere showing up in service:

May you be happy, may you be healthy, may you be peaceful, may you live with ease.


And now take a moment to acknowledge 3 things you are grateful for that have happened in the last 24 hours.

Something as small as the feeling of your sheets in bed, or your first sip of coffee this morning.

To a great accomplishment or interaction with someone.

Allowing ourselves to be witness to the miracles of life all around us, simply by calling it to our attention.


A now a moment to acknowledge something you're grateful for that's bigger than you.

Your family, your yoga community, your faith. Something bigger than all of us.
